چکیده

In this paper, we develop a discrete time, state variable feedback control regime to analyze the closed-loop properties associated with stabilizing the global mean surface temperature anomaly at 2oC within a sequential decision making framework made up of 20 year review periods beginning in 2020. The design of the feedback control uses an optimal control approach that minimizes the peak deceleration of anthropogenic CO2 emissions whilst avoiding overshooting the 2oC target. The peak value for emissions deceleration that satisfies the closed-loop optimization was found to be linearly related to climate sensitivity and a climate sensitivity of 3.5oC gave a deceleration of -1.9 GtC/a/20 years. In addition to accounting for the predicted climate dynamics, the control system design includes a facility to emulate a robust corrective action in the face of uncertainty. The behavior of the overall control action is evaluated using an uncertainty scenario for climate model equilibrium sensitivity.

Using Relative Humidity as a State Variable in Climate Feedback Analysis

An approach to climate change feedback analysis is described in which tropospheric relative humidity replaces specific humidity as the state variable that, along with the temperature structure, surface albedos, and clouds, controls the magnitude of the response of global mean surface temperature to a radiative forcing. Despite being simply a regrouping of terms in the feedback analysis, this al...

Influence of cloud feedback on annual variation of global mean surface temperature

The goal of this study is to estimate the cloud radiative feedback effect on the annual variation of the global mean surface temperature using radiative flux data from the Earth Radiation Budget Experiment. We found that the influence of the cloud feedback upon the change of the global mean surface temperature is quite small, though the increase of the temperature is as much as 3.3 K from Janua...

Entropy-based stabilizing feedback law under input constraints of a CSTR

The paper deals with nonlinear control under input constraints of a non isothermal Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) using thermodynamic concepts. More precisely, the paper presents an extension of the previous work (Hoang et al. (2012)) where the jacket temperature is used as the only control input. Constrained input control strategy is based on the observation that the chemical reactor o...

The Dependence of Radiative Forcing and Feedback on Evolving Patterns of Surface Temperature Change in Climate Models

Experiments with CO2 instantaneously quadrupled and then held constant are used to show that the relationship between the global-mean net heat input to the climate system and the global-mean surface air temperature change is nonlinear in phase 5 of theCoupledModel Intercomparison Project (CMIP5) atmosphere– ocean general circulation models (AOGCMs). The nonlinearity is shown to arise from a cha...
